About Bulgaria
Republic of Bulgaria is a part of the Balkans in south-eastern Europe.
It borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the
River Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and
Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the
country to the east.

kilometres. The average altitude of the country is 470 metres above sea
level.

History
Bulgaria has a long and rich history. The Thracians were the first
people to settle the land, and archeologists today are still
discovering traces of that ancient civilization. The first Bulgarian
state was formed in AD 681, uniting the Bulgars with the local Slavic
people. The Bulgarian Empire rivaled the Byzantines for control of the

The average life expectancy for women is 74, and for men - 67. About one quarter of the population is at the age of pension. Most of Bulgarian population lives in cities. More than a million and a half people live in the capital city of Sofia, which is approximately one fifth of the total population.
